Having seen all 3 Purge movies, I kind of like how we got a slow burn. The first one starts out on a relatively low scale, focusing on one group of characters. The second one heads out on a bigger scale, with more characters that have expanded stories and a general sense of the universe. Then the third one which takes points from two and takes it to and even bigger step, with much high stakes and more lives in the balance. So, with this in mind, I don’t really dislike the the 1st Purge movie as much as I used to.
This one I thought was ok….Don’t get me wrong, i’m glad I saw it, I would recommend it for Purge fans and it is rememberable. My biggest problem with it is the directors lack of subtly. He put a swastica and a confederate flag on the evil military guy. I will admit that as a Southerner that flag bothered me because that seems to be the one way that can be interpreted differently but he didnt need either of those. Plus that “I want my candy bar” chick was just goofy. Plus at times I think his commentary got a little to in the way but, like I said. If you are a fan of The Purge then I would recommend it.
It was ridiculously over the top and I enjoyed it for being so. It was about as subtle as a brick to the face but it worked within the confined of the movie’s universe. After seeing it again, I think 2 is still the best of the series.
