Behind the Mask
An awesome horror black comedy about a crew filming a documentary about the rise of a new slasher villain, Leslie Vernon.
A film crew follows Leslie Vernon around as he shows them all the inner workings of a slasher villain. Various horror conventions are openly discussed by the characters. They poke fun at all sorts of horror movie cliches, like doors closing behind people and the final girl. They talk about famous horror villains like Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers, who all exist in the same universe as this film. The movie also makes reference to many famous slashers like Black Christmas and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
One of the coolest things that happens is the film shifts from documentary style to horror film so seamlessly that you don’t even realize it. Things start off somewhat lighthearted but get more and more serious as they get closer to Vernon’s first big killing spree.
The movie even has some cameos by famous horror icons Robert Englund, Zelda Rubinstein, and Kane Hodder. It’s clear the folks involved with this have a passion for horror because everything from the dialog to the scares comes across as pure gold.
The movie hit the festival circuit, and even though it won 6 awards at 6 different film festivals, it had a hard time finding distribution until finally going DTV in 2007 (There seems to be a trend going on here).
This is one of the best genre deconstruction films, and it puts the lazy Scream sequels to shame.
I adore this movie so much. I had to hunt it down a couple of years ago and Im glad I did its one of my favorite films
cecil what do you think of the 4 exsorsist films?
Some good, some bad.
the only bad one was ecsorcist 2 the herotic even now linda blair repriced she role
Haven’t seen 2 in ages.
This was really well done, just ran out and rented it. Shocked on how good it was thanks for the recommendation.
The kicker was I was trying to figure out which movies you might do next and I am hoping that the remake of Maniac with Elijah Wood is on the list. I didn’t have faith that it was going to be good but I was wrong, super creepy and fun.
Excellent!
I was surprised at how good the Maniac remake was. This is how you do a remake right so naturally, it got a limited theatrical run. If they did it all wrong and made it PG-13 it would have been released in 3500 theaters.
I love this movie! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. This movie is as much of a love letter to the slasher genre as The Cabin In The Woods is to the horror genre. It’s very clever and the lead actor, Nathan Baesel, steals the show. I really hope they make the sequel.
They are trying to make a sequel but are having trouble getting the funding. So sad, I want more!
