I know I’ve mentioned it a few times before, but I’ll say it again…Trick ‘r Treat is great.
Trick ‘r Treat is an anthology movie in the spirit of the original Creepshow. It is hands-down one of the best horror anthology films ever made.
Anthologies are hard because, often, one or two of the stories are really good, and the rest are so-so. With Trick ‘r Treat, all the stories are great. The other cool thing is the stories intertwine with each other, and with some you don’t even realize it until almost the end. Sure, some are stronger than others, but none of the stories are bad.
Beyond that, since the entire thing was written and directed by one guy, Michael Dougherty, the whole thing flows incredibly well. Many times, anthologies suffer from a lack of fluidity because each segment comes from a different director, which makes them feel disjointed. Not the case here.
Unfortunately, as it is with a few movies I’ll be recommending, the studio had no idea what to do with it. Despite making the rounds at film festivals and getting massive amounts of acclaim, the movie was delayed from it original theatrical release date of Halloween 2007 and was dumped DTV years later in 2009. There was a brief time in 2008 when, again, it was almost released in theaters, but that was scrapped for unknown reasons. This is even more idiotic because at the time, the popular show True Blood had just taken off, and Anna Paquin was featured prominently in one of Trick r Treat’s stories. They could have easily marketed the film around her sequence if they were weary of being able to attract audiences.
This is the perfect Halloween film. An outstanding mix of scares and humor. Many people have made this their A Christmas Story for Halloween.
Dang it…Should of watched it when it was streaming on Netflix not to long ago..will have to pick up! keep em coming!

The Theatre Bizarre is like that were they have 3 fairly good stories and 2 or 3 that are not so that good.
Been meaning to catch that one, heard pretty much the same thing
by the way i am danish but i am talking in english so you can understand mee
it all makes sense now!
I picked this up DAY 1 on Blu Ray (with the awesome slip cover). I loved it. LOVED IT. Loaned it over to my brother who hated it. The reasons why he didn’t like it were random (thats the kid from Bad Santa or I didn’t like that they killed the Handicapped kids); he is now disowned and his movie opinions are void. I thought some of the things they did with this was amazing like the bus scene, the interconnecting stories that you don’t know are connected.
But seriously I would love to know why this was really shelved for so long. In addition to Paquin/True Blood connection it also had Singer attached to it. They could have said from the producer of X-Men and Usual Suspects brings you Trick R Treat. Sure he had a HUGE bomb with Superman Returns a year before, which could have caused WB to sweep up everything and put it away because it was attached to Singer. Honestly now that I think of that I wouldn’t put it past the studio because they love assuming things that make no sense (comic book fans won’t go see this horror film because of Superman Returns!)
Studio heads often have no idea what they are doing I swear. They are always so focused on the bottom line and often will overlook when they have gold sitting right in front of them. Case and point, the original Paranormal Activity was purchased with the intention of just remaking it with a larger budget. It wasn’t until word of mouth and polls started that demanded the film get a wide release that they put it into theaters. Chances are if they would have remade the film it would have bombed and then they wouldn’t have the multi-million dollar cash cow that is rolling now.
Oh my God. I loved this movie so much. I saw previews for it on other DVDs for years and waited far longer than I should have before watching it. This was just great. What the studio did to it was a crime. A wide release could have started a franchise if they wanted.
Once again, I’m denied my Halloween series of connected-in-name-but-not-content movies.
They didn’t just drop the ball, they punted it off a cliff.
