I remember seeing the Thirteenth Floor in the theaters. I remember it being slammed as a low budget Matrix, but I preferred to think of it as a more intelligent take on the VR concept. Really underrated.
I loved Season of the Witch. It was an awesome double feature with Black Death.
Personally, I’ve been putting my Roku to work with streaming television shows. I just finished all four series of Black Adder and now I’m working my way through the original Twilight Zone.
Oh, I also watched Undercover Blues which was FAR more entertaining than it had any right to be. I saw it yonks ago when I was in high school, but it actually holds up reasonably well.
I’ve told a few people about B13 and they all made fun of it until they watched it. Amazing movies, the fights and action are some of the best I’ve seen.
Unfortunately some folks can’t look past the basics. The Matrix and the 13th floor both came out about the same time and are both sort of about VR so obviously (with the Matrix being the bigger movie) the 13th floor ripped it off. Ugh. Not even close.
Season and Black Death would make for a great double feature.
I figured I would just stick with movies but I do stream Doctor Who, Farscape, The X-Files, and plenty more tv shows. Now, they just need Gravity Falls on there!
B13 is easy to make fun of. I mean, a -French- action film? The jokes write themselves, but it’s totally worth watching.
Poor Thirteenth Floor. Loosely based on a story from 1964, but it’s a rip-off of the Matrix. I think it was filmed and finished before the Matrix, too. These are the people watching Honey Boo-Boo. Also… it seems Emmerich produced it. Wow.
True, when you think “action” you don’t usually think “France”…although Taxi is awesome.
UGH Honey Boo Boo. It is enraging to know that people actually watch that horse crap. If aliens ever come here and blow us up, it will be because of Honey Boo Boo.
I know a girl who told me that Memento was the dumbest movie she ever saw. I took solace in the fact that she watches The Jersey Shore and thinks White Chicks is one of the funniest movies she’s ever seen. She is an idiot.
Really? Oh that’s grand. I think I heard that before but forgot about it. The movie kind of reminds me of an older Jackie Chan movie, although with a bit of a mean streak.
Its funny you should mention Netflix instant, just last night I watched “Hardware”, which just screams “Good Bad Flicks”.
With Halloween fast approaching I like to stockpile on older horror flicks that have a layer of camp or cheese to it. (A result of growing up with the Universal Monsters I’m sure) I recently watched “The Abominable Dr. Phibes” and have a number of other horror movies with cheesy rubber masks or Ray Harryhausen effects waiting in my queue.
How about that and Richard Stanley’s other amazing movie Dust Devil? Although you have to see the Final Cut. The version that was released years ago was butchered and ruined by the studio.
Brick is one of my all-time favourite movies. Rian Johnson wins an unlimited pass from me (which is why I’m excited for Looper)
Definitely on UK Netflix (so probably on US) is the excellent anime movie Redline. It’s like a crazy old-school style anime version of Wacky Races.
If they have the BBC series Jonathan Creek in the US, give it a go. A clever but socially awkward stage-magician is roped into solving impossible crimes. (Hmmm, if that sounds like House/Mentalist et al then don’t worry – it’s quite different, and beat them to the screen by the best part of a decade)
Oh and I have been on the fence about Brick and Goon (seen it several times but always passed by it) but now I will watch it when I get a chance.
What is the WTF picture from? It looks amazingly strange that i am now interested in it (like the first time I saw a trailer for the Freaks or a gif from The Dancing Pig)
About 15 minutes into Super 8 I was already gushing about how good it was. So very happy.
Brick is very, very deep. Go in with your brain on. Goon is charming. If you like Slapshot you’ll be in the right mindset for it.
The WTF picture is something I’ve kept around for ages. Its from an artist who does these weird things with puppets called “Understanding Joshua”. (hey! lol) The weird puppet guy is supposed to represent how he sees himself. Not sure why they are pouring milk on this girl though. If you do a google search you can see a few more.
I got Netflix a year ago to try for the free month, and I don’t know what I did without it!
I actually just saw Rango, which I wasn’t sure I wanted to see, as I’m not a huge Johnny Depp fan. I loved it, such a funny and witty animated film – you can’t say that about alot of animated films.
Netflix is also good for its TV shows – I have basically almost finished Stargate SG-1 because of it, and am watching Farscape now.
Same. I’ve been happy with the DVD service for years and then the streaming is just something I can’t think of being without. We use it almost every night.
Never was all that interested in Rango but I avoid most of the CGI movies except the Pixar ones.
I hope they put Invasion up for streaming. Damn that was a good show that was cancelled way too soon.
Apparently they have a Netflix UK service but it is not as good as the American service and streaming quality depends on your internet connection but the review was in January so the service and the library of programs/films has probably increased with more up to date films.
From what I gather they want to have more movies available in other countries but a lot of it comes down to the various rights holders and who gets what cut of the money. (as always) So hopefully there will be a set standard across the board and everyone can enjoy the goodness.
Yep, you can pay a little extra and they send DVDs to your house. I have the 3 at a time option and I think it is like $20 a month. You can keep them as long as you like. When you mail them back they will send you the next one on your list. The turnaround is great. I mail one back, they get it the next day and then I get the new DVD the following day. So if I plan it right I can get 6 movies a week. (not that I have the time to watch that many anymore but still)
Interesting mention of Hardware above. I had the alternative stars and stripes cover on VHS but i never liked the movie back then. I watched the trailer on youtube – i’ll have to give it a re-watch.

Hmmm…they have a ton of BBC for streaming but only have Jonathan Creek on DVD. Oh well, I put it in my Q and I’ll check it out.

Hardware is a movie I love but it is tough to recommend. It is a very love it or hate it film, there doesn’t seem to be much middle ground.
