I was shocked and overjoyed to find out that the classic Don’t Open Till Christmas was getting the full restoration treatment. On top of finally getting a decent print of the film (the old DVD was not much better than a VHS transfer) the disk has tons of features. A Documentary about Dick Randall, tons of production notes, and “The making of a horror film” which was never available outside of the UK. I would have loved a commentary but considering many of the folks involved have since died, I can understand.
This movie holds a special place in my heart for not only being a good slasher but for being the movie that launched Good Bad Flicks.
The DVD was just released 12/6 from Mondo Macabro and obviously I instabought. Thanks to James @ObscureCinema1 for the tip!
Awesome! I just ordered mine the other day so I’m hoping to get it before Christmas. Never seen the flick before so I’m hoping its not too bad.
It’s a very odd movie but one of my favorites. The kills are really inventive and the new print looks outstanding. I’m seeing things I never saw before because the old print was so dark. I hope you like it!
Yea I’m glad I’ll get to see it with this new transfer. It looks like it could be fun. Plus I figured I’d need a Christmas horror for the Christmas season.
its so odd to see the mondo macabre logo and red dvd case on a movie that i have actually seen art in the vhs format (or to see them put out pretty much any english language movie) great stuff!
I know, right? I have Alucarda, Don’t deliver us from evil, and plenty of other classics. Lots of subtitled goodness. 🙂
No problem man, even though I’m not a big fan of the film myself. You can repay me by watching Ghost Town (1988)…but trust me, it’s your treat if you do decide watch it.
I know it’s not everyone’s cup ‘o tea. The new transfer looks great though, I think it may turn a few people around. The old print was so dark you couldn’t see half the stuff that was going on.
I have Ghost Town sitting right here. I plan on watching it before the year is out. ^^
Just an FYI, Christmas Evil and You Better Watch Out will be on TCM this Friday night!
Oops, “New Year’s Evil”, that is.
Ah, that makes sense. (since Christmas Evil and You Better Watch Out are the same movie)
That’s a pretty sweet double feature. Christmas Evil is such a cool take on Christmas horror (John Waters loves it!) and New Year’s Evil is more goodness from the house of Golan-Globus!
I have to do some work around the house to get ready for Christmas but I’ll be playing these in the background.
Thanks for letting me know!
Did anyone’s copy of this jump towards the end of the film? Could just be my player. I’ll have to check again.
