Great list. The Polanski one was certainly unpleasant in light of… well… everything.
I’m also going to give a nod to the Straw Dogs remake. It not only had the “Don’t Let Them In” nonsense, but apparently, the other tagline they dreamed up was “Unleash the Rage”. Seriously? Sheej.
Also, Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors, aside from having a ridiculous name, had the rather lame tagline of “It’s Ghastly / It’s Horrific / It’s Out Of / This World!” Which is a pity, because it’s a great movie.
The Polanski one is almost too perfect. They actually changed it in more recent releases but that was the original tagline.
Ugh, the Straw Dogs ones are just awful.
For Dr Terror, it seemed they tried to so with the names and tags to be as sensational as possible. There are a few good movies with stupid names. (Sssssss comes to mind)
You said it. Charlie St Cloud was basically “holy crap the girls all love Zack Efron and we need to put him in a heartfelt movie immediately to try and capitalize on this!”. Not a terrible movie but a concoction of other, better moves.
Love Reanimator! I haven’t done it because it is one of those movies that doesn’t really need defending. I have received many requests for it though, so I may do it anyway.
Was introduced to your videos through the Agony Booth, and came here. I really enjoy your videos due to the voice and “unique” aspect of not showing your face. I see many people who do videos like these appear on camera, and it kind of cheapens it. This makes it seem more professional, almost like watching movie trailers, or a critic like Ebert (and yes, he did appear on camera, but I am speaking of the level of professionalism of which I am reminded).
I also grew up around the same era, so I can relate to things you say, such as about the 1980s.
The reason I am commenting here is due to that one part with #17: “…I have to warn you…”. That is the type of comedy I like (I laughed and laughed). Keep going with that type of humor.
Thanks! Well, I do have a professional background in radio and in editing, so that helps a bit. 🙂
Wow, I don’t remember that Jaws one at all. That’s terrible! Good thing they seem to have buried it.
The other one “terrifying best seller…” is something they do all the time. They try to piggy back the success of the book/tv show/whatever they adapted it from to sell more tickets. I agree, it doesn’t do a good job of representing the film. It’s just more lazy marketing.
“Jaws 2” has a memorable tagline, but “Jaws” had what seems to me to be a weak one: “She was the first” (I think I first saw that on the tape soundtrack, or record). I just saw another was, “Do you like fish? Well, he likes you too…” I don’t recall seeing this on any advertisements, but it seems even more weak. I also did not think, “The terrifying motion picture from the terrifying No. 1 best seller” was a good drawing card, at least, it didn’t seem strong to me. I liked the movie, and that tagline didn’t seem to match the excitement of the film.

my top 3:
Alien vs Predator-“whoever wins, we lose”
Malone-“Ex-Cop, Ex-CIA, Ex-plosive”
Charlie St. Cloud-“Life is for living”
The AvP one was so kickass. I wish they didn’t butcher the film for the theatrical release.
Malone…lol! That’s a new one. Made me think of Action Jackson. (which is never a bad thing)
Charlie – good grief, how many movies have used that tired phrase?
To be fair, Charlie St. Cloud seemed to be a cinematic Shake-n-Bake, so a lame tagline sort of goes with the territory, no?

Reanimator- Herbert west has a very good head on his shoulders and another one in the dish on his desk.

It’s one of my favorites too. Has been since I first saw it in 87. But for a tagline, that ones a bad one!
I think it kind of fits the over the top theme of the movie. Sure its ridiculous but look at where it is coming from!
To be fair, one of the posters for “Scary Movie 2” says “We Lied”
I have to admit, that is pretty funny. Good for them. lol

Don’t want to bad mouth, and not saying “bad”, but wanted to offer some examples.
It’s cool I didn’t take it any other way. 🙂
