I have the power! In this week’s episode of Good Bad Flicks I look at how to adapt a cartoon into a live action film the right way. Masters of the Universe is a cool action sci-fi film that would be a good movie on its own, even without the tie in to the famous toy line.

I always figured Blade was sort of a half-assed attempt to do Lock Jaw, especially with the head appliance he had going on. Of course, I had no idea what was with the stupid psuedo-leader bat thing bad guy.
Incidentally, War Games and Krull are two of my most favorite movies ever. As is Dragonslayer, which was, sadly, a flop, despite being quite good and having some amazing practical effects. How do you make a fire-breathing dragon? Stick a couple flamethrowers in its mouth!
Blade was just weaksauce. They could have at least done something cool like have his blades fused to his hands or something.
War Games was a movie that really got me into computers. I thought all the stuff they did was so cool…then I come to find out that it is not really the way they portrayed it. Oh well, still sparked my interest and I may not be so computer savvy now if not for it. Krull kicks tons of ass, I even have the board game. I’m doing an episode on it one of these days.
I don’t understand how Dragonslayer was a flop. The effects were lightyears beyond what was going on at the time and the story was one of those timeless epics. A shame it still gets no recognition.
I used to watch War Games every year on my birthday. I don’t know how that tradition got started, but it was pretty wonderful.
I remember watching Krull in the theaters. Or rather, I remember not watching it because I spent much of it terrified and with my face buried in my mother’s side. I think it was the swamp scene that caused me to check out. I watched it, much later, and was stunned at how good it was. When I learned that it was out on a pretty nice DVD, I snapped it up and still watch it. I’d love to see an episode dedicated to Krull. It deserves some love.
Like you, I’m lost on Dragonslayer’s failure. While some of the blending was off (the scene where Vermithrax is blasting Galen, you can clearly see the seam where she was patched in. But still, it’s no worse than the Rancor scene two years later in Return of the Jedi. It’s just a fantastic movie about old worlds dying and making room for the new. And a kick ass dragon.
War Games is one of those movies you can watch over and over. It moves at just the right pace and has plenty of things in it that still make me happy.
I had the Atari game for Krull but for whatever reason didn’t see it until it hit home video. I’ve since seen it quite a few times on VHS and the really nice DVD. I remember it being marketed quite extensively and am still confused as to why it didn’t catch on.
I think perhaps people weren’t expecting such a dark movie from Disney…although this was back in a time when Disney made darker films like The Black Hole and Something Wicked This Way Comes. I mean, the princess gets eaten in a very brutal and unexpected way! One thing I miss about the 80s, they took risks.
I was wondering if it is not too much trouble and feel free to not bother but would you be able to list off all the movies shown in your intro? Some of those movies look really intriguing to me.

Did you say at the start Courtney Cox was quitting her job, DUMPING HER BOYFRIEND, and moving to Jersey?
Uh, why is he ok with this, even giving her a ride to the airport? In fact it seems like she has no intention of leaving him.
I know this isn’t essential to the plot, yet it bothered me.
For the record, the last time I watched this all the way through was way back in the late 80s as a kid, so my recollection of the entire film is vague at best.
